Work

The Oxford English Dictionary [OED] defines Work as ‘Activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a result’. Vast oversimplification because nobody would consider solving a crossword puzzle or peeling a carrot as work. Again, pushing on a brick wall for hours would tire you out with no visible outcome or ‘result’ (other than being exhausted eventually).

Let’s settle for the common understanding that work is a means of earning income.
