One of the enduring lessons from this project was how to get things done. As the nominal World Bank international team leader, I was responsible for co-ordinating the sparse resources I ‘imported’ from Canada to work on the project with the local consultants – spread over half a dozen sole proprietorships and businesses. The lesson – make the work result important to the people doing the work (not exclusively the project manager). As someone observed, if it’s important to the people doing it, then it will happen on schedule as evidenced by the fact that Carnival has never been late!
